As part of China Up Close, a diverse program of events exploring Chinese culture and society, ACMI is presenting a series of talks by prominent Chinese and Australian experts in the fields of art, economy and environmental issues to accompany films by some of China's leading contemporary auteurs.
On 9 February, see Ai Weiwei, Never Sorry (2012), a portrait of one of the key figures in contemporary art, together with a talk about the way artists assume the role of commentators on issues impacting modern Chinese identity. Jia Zhangke's A Touch of Sin (2013), on 16 February, is followed by an examination of the global context of China's emerging capitalist economy and the changing world of the middle class. Other films include The Grandmaster (2013) and The Iron Ministry (2014), and, on 24 February, a panel of prominent Chinese Australians – film director Tony Ayres, writer Benjamin Law, cultural critic Juliana Qian and artist William Yang – discusses the issues faced growing up in two cultures.
