Tea has been a deeply rooted part of Chinese life since it first rose to popularity more than 1,000 years ago during the Tang Dynasty (618-906). And with tea, teahouses became popular meeting places. The teahouse has evolved as a key element of Chinese social life – a place to gather and relax.

Some teahouses are tranquil while others bustle, offering entertainment from traditional storytelling to music or excerpts of Peking opera.

Chinatown's Penjing Tea Garden brings together some of those elements that have made teahouses favoured meeting places throughout China.

Teahouse at the Chinese Museum's Chinatown Visitor Centre is open 11am to 5pm. Select your tea and Chinese biscuits for $8.50 per person. Penjing plants for sale.

Separate entry to view Museum: Open 10am to 5pm. Adults $9, Concession $7, Family $21.
